BIO of B.E. Mann
American Reggae Artist, Broadcaster, and Producer
B.E. Mann is an American reggae recording artist, radio broadcaster, and independent music producer whose work blends elements of roots reggae, old school dancehall, and lovers rock. His vocal approach combines melodic singing with Jamaican patois–influenced DJ-style delivery. Since the early 1990s, Mann has released numerous recordings, performed extensively throughout the United States and internationally, and maintained a parallel career in radio broadcasting, television production, and independent music production. His work frequently emphasizes positive themes, cultural awareness, and performance traditions rooted in reggae music.
Early Life and Background
B.E. Mann was raised in an inner-city environment where music and dance were prominent elements of everyday life. Exposure to early hip hop and reggae sound system culture influenced his interest in rhythm, movement, and performance at a young age.
His grandfather was an evangelist who traveled internationally and hosted a radio program broadcast in parts of the Caribbean and West Africa. Mann began assisting with radio equipment as a child and later appeared on air reading listener correspondence. These early experiences introduced him to broadcasting and audience engagement.
Through correspondence with listeners in Jamaica, Mann received records and cassette recordings that broadened his exposure to reggae music and culture. He later expanded this collection through UK mail-order distributors during the rise of the British 2 Tone movement.
By adolescence, Mann had begun experimenting with vocal performance, combining melodic singing with DJ-style toasting influenced by Jamaican patois delivery—an approach that would later become a defining feature of his musical style.
Musical Career
Radio and Broadcasting
Mann’s involvement in radio broadcasting began during his teenage years and remained an important parallel to his music career.
At age sixteen he became an on-air disc jockey at Akron’s WAPS-FM (89.3 FM). In 1988 he launched and hosted Reggae Rhythms From Around the World, a weekly radio program he produced for approximately two decades.
The program featured reggae recordings from Jamaica, the United Kingdom, and the United States and helped introduce the genre to regional audiences while also promoting Mann’s own recordings.
During this period Mann balanced live performance with radio broadcasting, using his on-air platform to promote reggae music while developing his recording and touring career.
Mann also worked as the house disc jockey for a regional teen dance club known as Photo Dancing on the Planets, where he began incorporating live vocal performances over instrumental reggae tracks. These experiences helped transition him from DJ work into live band performance.
King Ov Heartz and Identity
Mann later formed The King Ov Heartz, a reggae band that performed throughout Northeast Ohio during the early 1990s. The group recorded original material and built a regional following through frequent live performances.
In 1995 Mann was recruited as lead vocalist for the reggae group Identity, which had connections to Island Records. After a period of touring and recording with the group—later known as New Identity—Mann returned to independent recording projects to pursue his own artistic direction.
He subsequently reassembled The King Ov Heartz lineup and continued touring and recording for several years before transitioning fully into a solo career in 1999.
Independent Production and The Energy Man
As his career progressed Mann increasingly assumed responsibility for the business aspects of his work, including booking, promotion, tour planning, and music production.
He founded the independent record label Mann 2 Mon Music, which became the primary platform for releasing his recordings.
For his 1999 album The Energy Man, Mann expanded his role as a multi-instrumentalist, performing much of the instrumentation himself. The album helped broaden his audience internationally and became one of the most recognized releases in his catalog.
Throughout his career Mann has continued to emphasize creative independence while performing extensively as a solo artist.
His live performances combine melodic singing with DJ-style delivery and reflect established reggae performance traditions.
Television and Media Work
Through Mann 2 Mon Music, Mann also produced music and sound design for television and educational media projects.
One of the most prominent projects was the Emmy nominated children's television series Ask Gilby,
produced in partnership with Akron Public Schools. Mann created original music for the program,
worked as sound editor, created themed music videos, and appeared as an actor in several episodes
portraying characters including “Uncle B.E.” and a mail carrier.
Mann also worked as a music and sound producer for the educational television program Small Tales,
distributed through regional cable systems, and contributed to KidJam Radio, an online children’s radio
initiative associated with Summit FM in Akron.
Production and Collaborations
Throughout his career Mann has worked with a network of regional and national musicians across reggae, rock, jazz, and funk traditions.
Among the musicians associated with his recordings and performances was guitarist Freddie Salem, a member of the Southern rock band The Outlaws and a prominent figure in the Akron music community.
Mann has also collaborated with producer and multi-instrumentalist Wes McCraw, guitarist Bret Kuhnash, guitarist John Thomas, guitarist Mikey “Frets” Robinson, vocalist/percussionist Milton Prince, vocalist Supa G, saxophonist Walt Wise, and saxophonist Kenny Anderson, whose career includes work with artists such as Gloria Estefan, Destiny’s Child, Bobby Caldwell, Tom Jones, and Jennifer Lopez.
In his later years also featured legendary keyboardist Nate Sprintly and guitarist Frank Furter.
In addition to his own recordings, Mann’s label Mann 2 Mon Music has been involved in producing and mastering projects by other reggae artists, and artists in the r&b, rap, pop, alternative genres.
An archived announcement from Mann’s website documented a collaboration with Jamaican reggae deejay Prince Jazzbo, in which Mann assisted with mastering and preparing archival reggae recordings for release.
Critical Reception & Press Coverage
Over the course of his career, B.E. Mann has received coverage in regional newspapers, international reggae publications, and specialty music magazines. Journalists and critics have frequently highlighted his energetic live performances, versatile vocal style, and ability to blend traditional reggae influences with contemporary production.
A feature article in Cleveland Scene described Mann’s music as a hybrid of reggae rhythms, pop melodies, and club-oriented grooves, noting that his work often challenged expectations within reggae circles while still drawing from the genre’s established traditions.
International reggae media has also documented Mann’s recordings and stylistic range. In a feature article titled “B.E. Mann – Neues Album” published in Reggae News Magazine (Germany, March–May 2005), editor Robert Akhigbe discussed Mann’s catalog and noted his ability to move between roots reggae, lovers rock, and dancehall-influenced material.
Music critic Chuck Foster, writing in The Beat Magazine (Vol. 23, No. 6, 2004), commented on Mann’s understanding of classic reggae styles while reviewing his recordings:
“B.E.’s grouping of songs into the roots rock reggae, vintage and dancehall, lovers rock and dub categories shows an intelligible grasp of styles a lot of ‘local’ reggae is sadly lacking. My favorite is ‘Bring Back the Days,’ which keeps it simple but still has something to say. Interestingly Mann is one of the few singers who is as good in the DJ style as he is singing.”
Regional press coverage has also noted the reach of Mann’s recordings outside the United States.
An article in Revue Magazine (November 2000), written by Rob Lucas, reported that:
“B.E. Mann is now one of the most popular dance artists in the UK.”
Additional reporting in the Sandusky Register entertainment section Funcoast (November 7–13, 2007), written by Justin Powell, referenced Mann’s international chart activity and noted that his recordings achieved six number-one songs in eight European countries.
Newspaper features in publications such as the Akron Beacon Journal, Canton Repository, and Toledo Free Times have documented Mann’s extensive touring schedule, radio broadcasting career, and independent recording output over several decades.
These articles collectively highlight Mann’s role as a long-running figure in the regional reggae scene and an independent artist whose recordings have reached audiences beyond the United States.

REPUTABLE MEDIA QUOTES:
"In short, Mann travels through various delivery styles and techniques on THE ENERGY MAN, but doesn't come across as anything but professional and solid. B.E.Mann is one of the most energetic performers our country has to offer. Mann is incedibly talented. He is credited for all keys, piano, bass, synth bass, rhythm guitars, percussion, and drum programming. Mann's best qualities however, is his vocals. He's got a silky smooth, clean delivery with just a shade of alluring quality that leads you in. It is clear that B.E.Mann IS the energy man..." Mtv.com
" As a singer B.E. Mann commands the microphone to deliver diverse tones, smooth & mellow but hit the points. Understandable stories with classic rythems. Worth having in your collection as it will make you dance and smile and what else can you ask from a CD. "
Amsterjammin.com december 2004
"...(B.E.'s) grouping of songs into the roots rock reggae, vintage and dancehall, lovers rock and dub categories shows an intelligible grasp of styles a lot of 'local' reggae is sadly lacking. My favorite is 'Bring Back The Days' which keeps it simple but still has something to say. Interestingly Mann is one of the few singers who is as good in the dj style (as he is singing), particularly on the aforementioned song where he affects U-Roy-ish personae to talk about the great Jamaican artists of yore. " The Beat Magazine / Chuck Foster vol.23 #6 2004
" If you are a follower of this fine performer (you'd) know the B.E.Mann has been doing his best to meld r&b, hip hop, and reggae styles together - into a sound that he can without a shadow of a doubt, call his own. (Concerning his live performance) Mann is electric enought to ignite an entire geriatric ward.... B.E. IS a great performer with an incredible voice..." MUSIC'S BOTTOM LIVE MAGAZINE
" B.E.Mann IS Cleveland's top reggae musician! B.E.Mann is the whole package. Also known as the "Energy Man" for his dance-powered live shows. Could be one of Clevelands best kept secrets! B.E. Mann -- Known for his dance-powered live shows, B.E. Mann is to reggae what George Clinton is to funk. A versatile reggae artist who sings as well as plays bass, keyboards, guitar, and trumpet, Mann is a sensation in cities where reggae is seen through a kaleidoscope rather than a microscope. Influenced more by Motown than Marley, Mann's music is smooth and soulful, not angry or political. His last album, The Energy Man, is filled with more funky guitar solos and manic horn arrangements than you'll hear at a P-Funk party. " NORTHCOAST SCENE MAGAZINE
" His singing voice is an amalgam of smooth 80's-early 90's dancehall crooner Sanchez and the legendary Frankie Paul. Mann IS a talented arranger/producer..." BEACON JOURNAL NEWSPAPER
" It's hard to imagine the cold shores of Lake Erie could produce reggae that doesn't sound unauthentic, but B.E.Mann is an exception. "
FREE TIMES MAGAZINE
" B.E. IS the greatest reggae man in the land. I just totally love his cds. I listen to them at home, on vacation, everywhere! This guy is so much fun!..." FOX8NEWS(Cleveland)
" B.E.Mann knows how to soothe the soul with light pop and an upbeat dance rhythm. He takes the original reggae sound and juices it up to a whole new style I can't help but like." THE RENEGADE
" People who have not heard B.E. and enjoy well-crafted pop will consider this a treat. Mann'ssongs are so hook laden, listeners will be hard pressed to keep from humming them. These songs are great vehicles too for Mann's unusually smooth and expressive voice....His style is original and inviting!!! " DIG MAGAZINE
" Reaching out to the audience is Mann's forte... ceaseless energy, serenading woman, and dancing with abandon, it makes for a fun visual counterpart to the bouyant music. B.E. also soulfully sings his original songs, with a lot of toasting - in a convincing island dialect...."
THE CANTON REPOSITORY NEWSPAPER
" B.E.'s blend on music brings a very listenable whole... Emphasis is on clear sincere vocals...Nice vocal blend!" THE BEAT MAGAZINE
"The Energy Man" is a grovin' CD that makes ya want to move, even while your sitting. The delivery from B.E. Mann is nothing short of smooth and energetic. A delight to listen to at any age. INTERNATIONALLY FRESH
"Continuing with his love of music and entertaining, the Energy Man keeps in stroll with his pop, dance and reggae style that made him one of the most recognizable names in the Northeast Ohio music scene. Mann is to reggae as Ricky Martin is to Latin music. His music screams pop, and everything he does is accessible to all ages. He is heavy on giving an entertaining performance and he portrays fun and energy in his music. Mann is like an unending party. If you are thinking reggae thoughts of Bob Marley-esqe sound, you won’t find that here. Mann is more along the lines of Culture Club meets Shaggy -- and heavy on the '80s electronica." REVUE MAGAZINE
"Cameo comes to the islands when Dub-lite basslines, Dancehall toasting, compressed backing vocals (a favored recording technique of The Artist) and slick, House grooves come together. " LISTEN.COM
